Discussions are underway to develop a standardized curriculum for telecommunicator certification. The Office of Emergency Communications (OEC) and the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), Training and Standards Bureau are beginning to conduct stakeholder outreach.

OEC and DOJ want to gather ideas and input from stakeholders before curriculum is developed. This is at the beginning stage. Currently, DOJ certifies law enforcement officers in Wisconsin. One suggestion is to certify telecommunicators once they successfully complete the curriculum and field training.

Last month, OEC and DOJ met with the Badger State Sheriffs’ Association at their communications conference to gather input. OEC and DOJ will continue to participate in outreach with other stakeholder organizations including the Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Association and the Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association.
